Major South Korean Carrier Selects VeriSign for Mobile Media and Messaging Gateway Services
VeriSign Enables SK telink to Build Reach and Revenues; Expands VeriSign Mobile Messaging's Asian Footprint by 45 Million Subscribers

SK telink, an international
telecommunications carrier in South Korea and a subsidiary of SK Telecom,
has selected VeriSign Messaging and Mobile Media, a division of VeriSign,
Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN), the trusted provider of Internet infrastructure
services for the networked world, as its provider of Open Connectivity
Short Message Services (OCSMS), VeriSign announced today. The agreement,
which expands VeriSign's leadership in SMS services in the Asian market,
creates an important new partnership for the VeriSign Open Connectivity
gateway -- one that will broaden VeriSign's SMS reach by roughly 45 million
of all mobile subscribers in Korea.
By selecting the VeriSign gateway, SK telink becomes part of an OCSMS
platform that already connects 600-plus carriers in more than 150 countries
and more than 2.4 billion subscribers worldwide. Through VeriSign® OCSMS,
SK telink will be able to exchange inter-carrier person to person text
messages globally, across wireless carriers and devices, on a highly
reliable network. VeriSign OCSMS may enable mobile carriers to increase
reach and revenues while reducing the operating costs typically associated
with establishing operator agreements, negotiating contracts, and managing
billing relationships.
SK telink's international SMS customers, which account for about 70 percent
of market share in the international inter-carrier SMS of the 3 major
mobile carriers in South Korea, will now be able to send and receive
inter-carrier messages to more mobile subscribers globally.
"Mobile messaging is not a regional phenomenon, but a global one," said
Seonggyun Hong, vice president of SK telink. "Now through VeriSign OCSMS,
we've connected our customers seamlessly to billions of people worldwide.
The opportunities for communication, e-commerce, and collaboration are
endless and VeriSign will provide those opportunities with reliability,
heritage, and expertise."
VeriSign has been actively growing its reach in Asia. The relationship with
SK telink and the launch of 30 new customers in the last two quarters to
VeriSign OCSMS, including Bayan Telecommunications of the Philippines (July
2008), are testimony to VeriSign's growing leadership in SMS services in
Asia and worldwide.
"As a premier carrier in one of the world's most active mobile countries,
SK telink has tremendous opportunities to increase revenues by extending
their reach via the VeriSign gateway," said Charles Landry, vice president
and general manager of VeriSign Messaging and Mobile Media. "SK telink
already has the expertise and strong brand recognition a carrier needs to
make inroads in SMS. Our gateway provides the missing ingredient: access to
a robust, reliable network that provides a great customer experience."
VeriSign was among the first vendors to successfully meet the compliance
criteria for Open Connectivity SMS Hubbing Solutions as defined by the
GSMA, the operator-led trade association representing the global mobile
industry. The VeriSign OCSMS platform supports both IP and SS7 transport
mediums to provide the flexibility for operators to exchange messages
through a single connection to VeriSign.
