Manufacturers Directory Reports Wyoming Sees Another Year of Industrial Employment Gains

EVANSTON, Ill., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment inWyoming increased another 2.4% over the past twelve months, according to the 2009 Wyoming Manufacturers Directory, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI)Evanston, IL. MNI (http://www.manufacturersnews.com) reportsWyoming gained 799 industrial jobs from September 2007 to September 2008, continuing the gains the state has seen over the past few years.

According to earlier MNI reports,Wyoming saw a 3% gain in industrial jobs between September 2006 and 2007, and a 4.9% gain over MNI's 2005-2006 survey period.

"While most other states have been losing manufacturing jobs to technology, automation and outsourcing, Wyoming's natural resources and its proximity to the Canadian market have helped the state increase exports and retain industrial facilities," says Tom Dubin, President of theEvanston, IL-based publishing firm, which has been surveying industrial sectors since 1912.

Manufacturers' News reportsWyoming is home to 1,336 manufacturers employing 33,260 workers. MNI profiles manufacturers of all sizes, including small, start-up companies with just a few employees. MNI reports 50% of manufacturers inWyoming employ five or fewer workers, compared to the national average of 34%.

MNI reports roughly half of the state's industrial workers are employed in the oil & gas extraction, minerals and mining sectors, representing 16,876 jobs. Within this sector, oil and gas extraction employs 9,844 workers, up 12.5% over the year. Industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing accounts for 3,954 of the state's jobs, up 12% over the year due partially to an expansion atCasper-based Toromont Energy Systems. Chemicals and allied products also saw an increase in employment, up 2.2% over the past twelve months, and currently accounts for 2,107 of the state's industrial jobs.

Other sectors to gain jobs include primary metals manufacturing, up 7.5%; electronics, up 5.2%; textiles/apparel, up 3.8% and stone, clay and glass, up 1.4%. Sectors losing jobs over the survey year include furniture/fixtures, down 14%; lumber/wood, down 6.6%; printing/publishing, down 5.2%; food products, down 5.1%; rubber/miscellaneous plastic products, down 4.1%; transportation equipment, down 2.5% and fabricated metal products, down 1.7%.

MNI's city data showsGillette is the state's industrial capital with 5,636 industrial jobs, up 4.4% over the year. Second-rankedCasper accounts for 4,831 of the state's manufacturing jobs, up 4.3% over the past twelve months, while third-ranked Wright reported a gain of 8.7% and currently accounts for 3,354 of the state's jobs.Rock Springs is home to 2,479 of the state's industrial jobs, up 5.4%, whileCheyenne is home to 2,089 with no significant change reported over the year.
