The National Toy Hall of Fame Features The "Lowly Stick"

"The lowly stick could be a magic wand, a knight's sword or a fishing rod.

Now the universal plaything has landed in the National Toy Hall of Fame, along with Baby Doll and the skateboard." The Associated Press

Critics argue that the lowly stick doesn't belong in the National Toy Hall of Fame next to Mr. Potato Head or a box of Crayola crayons, but I think it's an excellent choice.

By honoring the stick the National Toy Hall of Fame is making the statement that imagination is a child's greatest toy. A stick can be anything a child wants it to be: A sword, a magic wand, a serpent or a spear.

My brother, three sisters and I grew up dirt poor, we were thrilled when our parents were able to buy us a bean bag, SuperBall or a Frisbee. But lack of toys didn't stop us from playing and having a good time. My brother and I waged epic battles in our back yard using twigs and rocks as soldiers and tanks.

I think that little kids would be better off if they turned off their video game consoles, and simply tossed a football in the back yard, or picked up a couple of sticks and played knights and dragons.
