Burton Group Analyst: Virtualization Alone Isn't a Business Continuity Strategy
Richard Jones uses Stratus Technologies-sponsored forum at Citrix Summit to advocate for high availability solutions
MAYNARD, Mass., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Few users understand that virtualized IT environments require higher availability from unscheduled downtime than traditional environments, according to the Burton Group analyst leading a Stratus Technologies-sponsored forum at the Citrix Summit.

Burton Group Vice President & Service Director Richard Jones will make his case for multi-tiered availability strategies in "New Trends in High Availability for Virtual Environments," a discussion to be held on Tuesday, 10/28, at 10:30 a.m. at the summit inOrlando, Fla. Jones will describe architectures for improving availability by using solutions such as fault-tolerant servers and high-availability software to minimize unplanned downtime. He maintains that although virtualized environments offer better recovery from downtime than conventional IT environments, they need higher levels of availability to meet today's business needs. High availability is especially important in virtualized environments because IT departments are consolidating applications on fewer physical servers, Jones said, raising the stakes of each failure far higher than in a conventional environment.
"Virtual environments can speed application or network recovery, but more and more companies can't afford to have their business-critical applications down for any amount of time, even if it's just a few minutes for failover," Jones said. "The growing number of companies virtualizing their applications must supplement vendors' first-tier availability features with higher availability solutions to reduce critical application downtime in order to meet more stringent business needs."
The Citrix Summit is the premier training conference exclusively designed for Citrix partners who are expanding their virtualization offerings, seeking smarter ways to deliver applications, and positioning themselves as trusted application delivery infrastructure advisors. Stratus is a roundtable sponsor.
"Virtualization has already shown its huge potential to rewrite the book on data center designs and application architectures," said Susan Deeney, Stratus worldwide director, Avance channel sales. "By sensitizing the audience at Citrix Summit to their growing high availability needs, we hope to help them design flexible yet reliable IT infrastructures that express the best points of each technology."
