Language Weaver to Give Four Presentations at AMTA 2008

Human communication solutions company Language
Weaver is sponsoring, presenting and exhibiting at The Eighth Conference of
the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA 2008
http://www.amtaweb.org/AMTA2008.html). Language Weaver founders and
executives Dr. Kevin Knight, Mark Tapling and Dr. Daniel Marcu will each
lead sessions at the event.
AMTA 2008 takes place in Waikiki, Hawaii, October 21-25, 2008. The
conference includes educational events for people who are interested in how
companies and government organizations use translation software in
practical, real world settings. There are courses, workshops, and
presentations from researchers, developers, and users of translation
software in business and government.
Following are Language Weaver's presentations at AMTA 2008:
Sixty Years of Statistical Machine Translation
Presented by: Dr. Kevin Knight, Founder, VP and Chief Scientist, Language
Weaver
Tuesday, October 21, 2008
9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. HST
This tutorial will describe the results of statistical machine translation
(SMT) research since 1948. Most of the tutorial focuses on the explosion of
SMT work in the past few years. Topics include evaluation of translation,
extracting translation rules from bilingual text, target language modeling,
runtime translation algorithms, specialized components, syntactic models,
and statistical training algorithms.
Machine Translation 2008: Science Meets Solution
Presented by: Mark Tapling, CEO, Language Weaver
Wednesday, October 22, 2008
9:30-10:30 a.m. HST
What does the language translation industry look like to outsiders? A
seasoned CEO in the software space, after 6 months in the translation
industry, provides insights about the market, its size, its customers, its
shortcomings and its potential. This session will also cover a significant
shift that is taking place -- one that is directing more clients' attention
to digital content -- and what that means for machine translation and human
translators.
Language Translation Solutions for Community Content
Presented by: Dr. Daniel Marcu, Founder and CTO, Language Weaver
Thursday, October 23, 2008
9:30-10:00 a.m. HST
This presentation will cover the growing demand to translate user generated
content (UGC) and the business case for doing so. Attendees will learn why
SMT is uniquely qualified to address the task of translating unstructured,
grammatically inconsistent content, the requirements for success for using
SMT to translate this information, and what companies need to consider to
get started on this type of translation endeavor.
Human vs. Machine: Competition or Collaboration?
Presented by: Dr. Daniel Marcu, Founder and CTO, Language Weaver
Friday, October 24, 2008
10:00-10:30 a.m. HST
While some say that machine translation will eliminate the need for human
translators, automated translation developers disagree. The amount of
content that is currently being translated is only the tip of the iceberg.
Dr. Marcu will address the growing amount of data that needs to be
translated and discuss the synergy that exists between human translation
and machine translation to meet future demand.
