Hoana Medical to Present Clinical Findings on Early Warning Systems at Abu Dhabi Medical Congress
HONOLULU, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoana announced today that Chief
Strategic Officer T. Heather Herdman, Ph.D., RN, will be presenting at the Abu
Dhabi Medical Congress in late October 2008 in theUnited Arab Emirates.
Herdman will be taking Hoana's clinical findings on "Nurses' Role in Early
Recognition" to the world stage, with hundreds of international clinicians,
administrators and healthcare industry experts in attendance. With patient
safety a priority in today's global healthcare environment, combined with
Hoana's recent acquisition of several international quality marks
(CE Mark, J-GMP and CANISO), Herdman will be showcasing the LifeBed(TM)
Patient Vigilance System to a broad, multi-national audience who will have
access to this vigilance technology for the first time.
Dr. Herdman leads the clinical team at Hoana Medical, the company which
developed the patented LifeBed technology. The LifeBed transforms any
hospital bed into an intelligent vigilance and alert network by invisibly
tracking a patient's basic vital signs and bed exit attempts. Unlike
traditional monitoring devices that have cuffs, electrodes or other
attachments to the skin, the LifeBed does this without any connection to the
patient whatsoever. Patients simply rest in bed while the bedside unit
detects their heart rate, respiratory rate and whether or not they are
attempting to get out of bed, if fall risk is a concern. And, while other
devices simply "monitor," the LifeBed system actually reads, interprets and
alerts clinical staff through existing nurse call systems based on the
patient's vital signs.
The LifeBed system has already been used on more than 15,000 individual
acute care hospital patients round the U.S. and has resulted in hundreds of
"interventions" -- providing a hospital patient a "new lease on life," that
might otherwise have been lost .
"We are very excited about introducing the LifeBed and LifeGurney Patient
Vigilance Systems for the first time on the global stage," said Dr. Herdman.
"Research is the backbone of what we do and is woven through every aspect of
our business. Our findings continue to show that nurses embrace early
recognition of patients at risk through technology. We are excited about
continuing to support quality nursing practice and accelerating adoption of
this revolutionary technology."
Current vigilance technology is already supporting nurses in providing the
safest patient care by alerting them to hospitalized patients that start to
decompensate between nursing assessments. Something as simple as finding
patients in trouble early makes an enormous difference in patient outcomes and
enhancing the effectiveness of rapid response teams.
Hoana Medical also recently announced its new LifeGurney(TM) Patient
Vigilance System, which uses the LifeBed technology on hospital gurneys,
allowing hospitals to maximize holding areas such as the emergency room and
ambulatory care by providing continuous vigilance to those patients.
