DU is one of few schools in the nation granted permission to convey a Ford scholarship, which is described as a fitting tribute to the presidential legacy and a lifelong mark of distinction for the student recipient.

President Ford grew up inGrand Rapids, Mich., and served as an instructor and assistant football coach in the 1940s at what would later become Davenport University. Shortly before his death, he gave DU permission to name a scholarship in his honor and memory.

The scholarship will be annually presented to one highly distinguished student who is enrolling full time as a freshman and pursuing a bachelor's degree in business on theGrand Rapids campus of the private university. The four-year scholarship includes tuition, room and board and a study abroad opportunity, along with fees and books.

Qualifications for the scholarship include a minimum 3.75 high school grade point average and a minimum ACT score of 31. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.70 must be maintained for renewal of the scholarship annually for a maximum of four years.

In addition, student applicants are required to write an essay describing how they have upheld and will uphold the values and character of President Ford. Finalists will be interviewed to determine the recipient. Deadline for the scholarship application is Jan. 15.
