American Thyroid Association Honors Furio Pacini, M.D., with 2008 Paul Starr Award

Newswise - The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is proud to honor Paul W. Ladenson, M.D., of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., with the 2008 Distinguished Service Award. This award, which recognizes important and continuing contributions to the organization, was presented today at the ATA's 79th Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill.

Dr. Ladenson is the John Eager Howard Professor of Endocrinology and Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Johns Hopkins University, where he is also Professor of Medicine, Pathology, Oncology, Radiology ,and International Health. In 2007, Dr. Ladenson was also named a University Distinguished Professor.

Dr. Ladenson was raised in Missouri and educated at Dartmouth College, Oxford University, and Harvard Medical School. He completed his training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Ladenson's research interests include the effects of thyroid hormone on the cardiovascular system, applications of thyroid hormone analogs, novel approaches to thyroid cancer diagnosis and management, and health economic analyses related to thyroid patient care. Currently, Dr. Ladenson is investigating the effects of the thyroid hormone analog diiodothyroproprionic acid on cardiac function and lipoprotein metabolism, and applications of BRAF mutation analysis and recombinant thyrotropin in thyroid cancer management.

Dr. Ladenson currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is past president of the ATA and of the Association of Subspecialty Professors. He is the author of more than 200 publications.
