Hoana Medical Expands Product Offering With New LifeGurney Technology
HONOLULU, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoana Medical, Inc. announced today its
second product offering, the LifeGurney(TM) Patient Vigilance System, which
transforms any patient stretcher into an untethered tracking, assessment and
alert network for both cardiac and respiratory functions. Like its sister
product, the LifeBed, the LifeGurney tracks a patient's heart and respiratory
rate, as well as bed exit attempts, and notifies the nursing team immediately
if the patient begins to deteriorate. It can help enhance hospital patient
safety efforts by providing nurses with an "extra set of eyes" while they are
tending to other patients, especially in holding areas, ambulatory surgery
recovery areas and emergency rooms where patient-to-staff ratios may be higher
and monitored beds may not be as readily available.
"We developed the LifeGurney Patient Vigilance System because nurses and
physicians asked us for it," said Dr. Patrick Sullivan, chief executive
officer ofHawaii-based Hoana Medical, Inc. "This is another giant step
towards our vision of partnering with hospitals to provide all patients with
continuous vigilance during their stay. Nurses and physicians can tend to
patients in need immediately and families can rest easy knowing that their
loved ones are watched every minute. Patient safety is an issue facing every
hospital in the country and the LifeGurney and LifeBed can help clinical teams
through medical vigilance."
LifeGurney provides a timely solution to the incredible overcrowding
issues facing almost all hospitals, resulting in delays in treatment to
patients. According to the Joint Commission, "one half of all 'sentinel
event' cases of poor outcomes that were attributable to delays in therapy
originated in the emergency department, with overcrowding playing a role in
almost one third of these cases."
On top of nursing labor shortages, increasingly stringent payor policies
and tighter economic resources, overcrowding in emergency rooms and other
"holding areas" is a growing problem and can lead to patient diversions,
stoppage of elective surgery and increased patient dissatisfaction -- all of
which negatively impact hospital throughput and revenue.
LifeGurney is a simple, easy-to-use technology solution that can maximize
a hospital's holding area by ensuring that patients waiting for services or an
in-patient bed are tracked continuously during their wait. Patients simply
lie on the stretcher with no attachments, electrodes or cuffs and, within
seconds, sensors under the coverlet (similar to a fitted sheet) capture
signals generated by the patient. The LifeGurney analyzes these signals and
notifies the clinical team through existing nurse call systems and/or bedside
alerts if they fall outside set parameters.
LifeGurney's sister product, the LifeBed, has experience on more than
15,000 patients across the U.S., or more than 1.5 million patient hours, and
has hundreds of nurse-reported interventions ranging from patients being
transferred to telemetry beds because the LifeBed detected an undiagnosed
cardiac arrhythmia, to clinicians finding a patient in need of emergency
resuscitation and being able to intervene immediately.
