Anti-Gun Group Gives Berrios Top Marks
CHICAGO, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Illinois Citizens for Handgun
Control (ICHC) awarded State Representative Toni Berrios an A+ for her record
against gun violence and praised her today for being "absolutely consistent on
policy issues."
Illinois' most recent annual statistics report that more than 1,000
residents were killed as a result of handguns. The Illinois Citizens for
Handgun Control's mission is to prevent death and injury associated with
firearm violence by educating citizens and elected officials about the issue.
"The reason for this rating is that as a sponsor and co-sponsor Rep.
Berrios has supported legislation that would reduce gun violence, not only for
her district, but the entire state ofIllinois," said Thomas Mannard,
executive director of the ICHC. "She is absolutely consistent on policy issues
regarding the safety ofIllinois residents and is doing everything she can on
their behalf."
Berrios said she was honored by the top grade and vowed to continue her
efforts.
"Since first being elected state representative in 2002, I have been an
active proponent of gun control inChicago and throughoutIllinois," said
Berrios. "Everyone says we have to stop gun violence. Well, we're the ones who
have to stop it and we need to work harder than ever before."
Berrios' endorsements include: the AFL-CIO, Illinois Federation of
Teachers, Personal Pac,Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, First Ward
Alderman Manuel Flores and the Democratic Committeeman of the First Ward,
Jesse Ruben Juarez.
Serving her third term in the Illinois General Assembly, Berrios
represents the Northwest Side, 39thChicago district which includes parts of
Avondale, Belmont Cragin, Hermosa and Logan Square. Berrios is the first
Puerto Rican woman to serve in theIllinois House of Representatives and the
legislature's youngest Hispanic.
She currently serves on five committees inSpringfield. She is the
Chairperson of the Biotechnology Committee and is the youngest member of the
Executive Committee. She is also a member of the Insurance Committee,
International Trade & Commerce and the Tourism & Conventions Committee. In
addition, Berrios serves as the secretary of the Illinois Legislative Latino
Caucus.
