Living Single’s 15th Anniversary

The cable network, TV One, brings the cast of Living Single back together for an hour special to look back on the show, which ran from 1993 to 1998. The series aired on the FOX Network Thursday nights between Martin and New York Undercover, as all three of them became popular with African-American viewers during the mid-90s.

Living Single follows the lives and loves of four women and two men both professionally and personally — living at a brownstone in New York City.

The women consists of Khadijah James (Queen Latifah), editor and publisher of the urban magazine Flavor; her sweet-natured yet naive cousin Synclaire (Kim Coles), an aspiring actress that is also Khadijah’s assistant at Flavor; attorney at law Maxine Shaw (Erika Alexander), who’s got an appetite for men — and food; Regine Hunter (Kim Fields), who loves to shop and gossip.

The men are suave and handsome stockbroker Kyle Barker (T.C. Carson), Max’s sparring partner/evolving love interest, and likable handyman Overton Jones (John Henston), who went on to court and marry Synclaire.

Living Single was created by Yvette Lee Bowser, who also wrote and produced the series as well as Half & Half and A Different World. She became the first African-American woman to develop her own primetime series, as Living Single has won the Image Award for “Outstanding Comedy Series” in 1996 and 1998.

An urban mixture of Sex & The City and Friends, the series’ first season was released on DVD on Valentine Day’s 2006; no word yet on the release of the last four seasons. Still, this underrated and undervalued series continues to be popular today thanks to reruns in syndication.

Living Single: The Reunion Show airs this Monday night at 7pm on the cable TV One Network.
