New Democrats to Install Living Roof on Top of Campaign Headquarters
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Sept. 19, 2008) - New Democrat party headquarters is going green on top. About 9000 square feet of dirt and plants will be crane-lifted onto the roof of Jack Layton's campaign headquarters downtown, then transformed into new urban green space with community-wide benefits.
The New Democrat Leader is committed to making his party as environmentally friendly as possible. Layton hopes his party's significant investment will raise awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of green roofs; encourage city governments to develop green roof strategies; and help home owners and businesses to learn more.
The installation process is being conducted by Job Done Construction Ltd., Ottawa's green roof experts. Examples of other projects can be seen at ottawagreenroofs.com.
A 'living roof' is not only a beautiful way to increase green space. Widespread greening of city roofs could reduce local ambient temperature from 0.5 to 2 degrees degrees Celsius, and improve air quality. They reduce storm water runoff (which affects water quality and infrastructure costs), carbon emissions and energy consumption.
