WASHINGTON, D.C. (EWORLDWIRE) Sep 19, 2008
National Black L.U.V. (love, unity & vision) Festival (NBLF) joins forces with Unity Health Care in the ONE VOICE HIV/AIDS Mobilization Campaign at John Marshall Park [4th & Pennsylvania Ave., NW] on September 21.
The National Black L.U.V. (Love Unity Vision) Festival (est. 1997) embraces the support of the community and the city for many years, being recognized as a 2006 Finalist in the Mayor's Art Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts and receiving a 2007 Proclamation from Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty for the 10th Anniversary proclaiming the Third Sunday in September Black L.U.V. Festival Day.
Known for making bold statements and leaving its attendees with challenges that prove to make the festival-goers more conscious to their surroundings and the communities that they live in, this year's message is incorporating the challenge of: A.C.T. On the Red, Black and Green.
A.C.T. stands for:
. Accountability for your health (Red - HIV/AIDS Awareness)
. Change in our Community (Black - Community Dedication of Service)
. Take Control of your environment (Green - Global Warming, Neighborhood Clean-Up Projects)
There's Strength in Numbers!
This year, Unity Health Care returns as a sponsor of the "Red Area" alongside the testing efforts and first-time involvement of D.C. Dept of Health.
With the rising rate of HIV/AIDS in the Washington metropolitan area, the Festival will continue to provide free testing for festival-goers with the objective to test all attendees.
"Unity Health Care Inc. is honored to take part in the BLACK LUV Festival for our third year," says Vince Keane, president/CEO of Unity Health Care Inc. "The commitment to foster a community spirit continues long after the festival has ended and will only grow with this years One Voice HIV/AIDS Mobilization Campaign."
In addition, the Red Area will provide a Health and Wellness Pavilion.
The NBLF stage has been blessed with performances by many national and local artists, poets and speakers: Black Sheep (Hip Hop Legends), Amiri Baraka, Last Poets, Wayna, Jive Recording Artist Raheem DeVaughn (Grammy Nominated), Yahzarah (Three Keys Music), Marc Dorsey (Grammy Winning Songwriter), Emoni Fela, Asheru (Boondocks), and Bomani (BET's "Read A Book").
This year's line-up includes performances sponsored by Comcast, and DCTV: Poet Sunni Patterson (Def Poetry Jam), Mambo Sauce, Farafina Kan (International Drummers), Hip Hop Pioneers, Kurtis Blow and Afrika Bambaata.
In the 10th year, NBLF received a grant from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities which allowed NBLF to award The NBLF Community Award to Cease Fire Don't Smoke the Brothers and Sisters and National Activist, Brother Bey, presented by Big Tigger (WPGC/LIVE In the Den).
This year's 2008 Community Award will be presented to Dr. Frances Cress Welsing (Author of The Isis Paper) presented by Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.
Several organizations have committed to the Festivals' message of empowerment and world community awareness and outreach.
