AMACO/Brent Hosts Potters Council Regional Conference in Indianapolis

AMACO/Brent is hosting the Potters Council
Regional Conference, 'Surface, Form and Substance' in Indianapolis, Indiana
from September 19-21. Attendees will explore techniques to create surface
enhancing forms in sculptural and functional works of clay. Featured
artists include Debra Fritts, Ovidio Gilberga, Susan Kemenyffy, Eva Kwong,
Lana Wilson, and Jeffrey Nichols.
AMACO/Brent, makers of quality ceramic pottery kilns, proudly hosts two days of
demonstrations and hands-on opportunities. Talented artists will
demonstrate innovative techniques. Debra Fritts will demonstrate a
handbuilding technique in 'The Figures In Clay.' A ceramic artist and
teacher from Roswell, Georgia, Fritts will show attendees how to combine
modeling, pitching and coiling.
Ovidio Giberga will examine color in ceramics in 'The Aesthetics of Color
in Ceramics.' Head of the Ceramics Department at University of Texas at
San Antonio, Giberga was featured in the April 2008 'Ceramics Monthly.'
Giberga will explore approaches to glazing during 'Surface and Form:
Emphasizing, Altering or Ignoring.' From creativity to color to the ceramic pottery
kiln, attendees will consider new techniques.
Susan Kemenyffy, recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts
Fellowship Grant, will host 'Drawing Is Not Decoration.' Kemenyffy's work
is featured in the Smithsonian Institution and the Philadelphia Museum of
Art.
Eva Kwong worked at the Nature Lab at the School of Design. During her
workshop 'Sensuous Forms & Evocative Surfaces Using Velvet,' Eva Kwong will
show how to enhance clay forms with velvet.
Lana Wilson has written a column for 'Clay Times' magazine since 1996 and
appeared on Discovery Channel about working in clay while making a teapot.
During 'Innovative Soft Slab Teapot,' Lana Wilson will demonstrate
construction techniques with textured clay.
Jeffrey Nichols is an artist, educator and exhibitor from Kentucky. In
'Exploration in Color: Uniting Form and Surface,' Nichols will explore the
integration between form and substance. In the 'Ceramic Arts Daily
Newsletter,' Nichols says, "Trying to develop one's own voice in clay
certainly can be a challenge... I finally realized that traditional ceramic
processes were getting in the way of my ideas."
