Total Request Live (TRL) Says Good Bye: 1998-2008

All good things have to come to an end, as in this case, TRL — Total Request Live. It was announced yesterday that the show will end its 10-year-run on MTV.

Since its debut in 1998, TRL gives music viewers the opportunity to vote on their favorite videos of popular artists as well as comment on the air about why they love the video — including the singer or band. Even the musicians stop by the set to perform live, and even the actors came by to promote and talk about their latest movies.

Carson Daly first hosted TRL in 1998, and has gone to become a fan favorite. He stepped down in 2003 to host his own late night show on NBC, Last Call. Since Carson’s departure, there have been several TRL hosts over the years such as Vanessa Minnillo and future One Tree Hill star Hilarie Burton. Currently hosting TRL are Damien Fahey and Lyndsey Rodrigues.

During its heyday, the series has been known for launching the careers of “boy bands” Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and 98 Degrees; pop princesses Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore, and Jessica Simpson. Classics such as “Bye, Bye, Bye”, “What a Girl Wants”, and “Oops! I Did It Again” has gone to be part of TRL‘s Hall of Fame.

TRL will make its final request with a two-hour special that will mark the end of an era sometime in November.
