Man Has Seizure, Dog Calls 911
By Robert Paul Reyes
"'Man's best friend' doesn't go far enough for Buddy - a German shepherd who remembered his training and saved his owner's life by calling 911 when the man had a seizure.
Clark said police are dispatched whenever 911 is called, but that Stalnaker's address was flagged in Scottsdale's system with a notification that a trained assistance dog could call 911 when the owner was incapacitated.
Stalnaker adopted Buddy at the age of 8 weeks from Michigan-based Paws with a Cause, which trains assistance dogs, and trained him to get the phone if he began to have seizure symptoms. Buddy, now 18 months old, is able press programmed buttons until a 911 operator is on the line, Clark said. Associated Press/Amanda Lee Myers
I have a German Shepherd/Pit Bull and I can't even train her to fetch my newspaper. When I throw a tennis ball she runs and grabs it, but she doesn't bring it back, regardless how much I beg.
And my cats are hopeless, if I had a seizure they would call for Chinese take-out and hope I didn't come to until they were finished eating.
I am in good physical health, but I wonder if Paws with a Cause could help out a lazy bum like me. I would love to have a trained dog who can bring me a nice cold beer from the fridge, call Dominos and order a pizza, and fetch me my slippers.
My pooches may not take to training very well, but they always welcome me home with wagging tails and sloppy kisses. Dogs are truly man's best friend.
