Orchard Supply Hardware Raises Over $500K for Early Cancer Detection at 9th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Orchard Supply Hardware (OSH), a leading regional home improvement retailer, raised over $500,000 dollars for the Canary Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds research in early cancer detection, during its 9th annual OSH Charity Golf Tournament in July at the Blackhawk Country Club inDanville, Calif. Over 260 golfers participated in the tournament and more than 80 businesses sponsored the event to raise much needed funds for crucial early detection research activities.

This year's tournament marked Orchard Supply Hardware's first charity event with the Canary Foundation since announcing the organization as its charity of choice last spring. All proceeds from the tournament will directly benefit Canary's efforts to develop tests for the early detection of cancer. Early intervention has proven more effective than late stage treatment, so investment in early detection is more critical than ever as funding for cancer research at the federal level continues to decline. In addition, less than 15 percent of research funding goes into early detection today.

Over 1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in 2008 according to the American Cancer Society. Although the early detection of cancer is within sight, reaching the end goal of efficient, cost-effective early detection tests requires successful completion of large and complex projects involving numerous collaborators and institutions. Since 2004, Canary has raised over $27.9 million in pledges towards its goal of $100 million for early detection research.

"We are tremendously grateful to Orchard Supply Hardware and to all the participants and volunteers that took part in this year's golf tournament," said Don Listwin, founder and chairman of Canary Foundation, "It is gratifying to see the community come together to support Canary Foundation in our goal to save lives through early cancer detection."

"Orchard Supply Hardware is proud to rally our company and supporters behind the Canary Foundation's very important mission for early cancer detection," said Rob Lynch, president and CEO of OSH. "We're thrilled to be playing a role in this meaningful endeavor, and have no doubt that their work will impact and save millions of lives."
