Newswise - Dr. William F. Owen, Jr., president of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Dr. Peter S. Amenta, interim dean of the UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School have announced the appointment of Dr. Robert S. DiPaola as the new director of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), the state's only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. DiPaola, a clinician and researcher at CINJ since 1994, was selected following a national search that began in 2007.

"Dr. DiPaola is one of the nation's leading researchers in the area of prostate, bladder and kidney cancers," Dr. Owen said. "His leadership and his expertise in translating research from the laboratory to the bedside will help CINJ continue its mission of excellence in both cancer care and cures. We are excited about Dr. DiPaola's commitment to extending CINJ's service and expertise throughout the State."

Dr. DiPaola, of Long Valley, earned his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine, followed by a medical residency at Duke University Medical Center. He completed an oncology and hematology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and has written more than 200 articles, abstracts and book chapters on cancer and his research. Dr. Dipaola is a tenured professor of medicine at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and chairs a National Cancer Institute committee with responsibility for the development of national and international clinical trials for treatments of prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancers.

"New Jersey's cancer community will greatly benefit from Dr. DiPaola's leadership," Dr. Amenta said. "His proven expertise in the field of oncology will spur continued growth at CINJ and help to attract even more talented researchers to our university."

Dr. Joseph R. Bertino, who has served as the interim director of CINJ for the past 18 months, said, "It is only fitting that CINJ select a permanent director whose reputation in the cancer community is held in as high esteem as the institution itself. Dr. DiPaola has helped our world-class facility grow over the past 14 years, and he is poised to take us to new heights in the coming years."

"It will by my privilege to advance CINJ to the top echelon of comprehensive cancer centers in the country," Dr. DiPaola said. "By utilizing a team science approach with collaborators from across the globe, we will be able to achieve this vision and further establish CINJ as a leader in the area of oncology research, treatment and education statewide and beyond."

The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is the state's first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is dedicated to improving the prevention, detection, treatment, and care of patients with cancer. CINJ's physician-scientists engage in translational research, transforming their laboratory discoveries into clinical practice quite literally bringing research to life. The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is a center of excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) is the nation's largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,500 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Last year, there were more than two million patient visits to UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a mental health and addiction services network.
