Taxpayer Association Supports Governor's Compromise Budget

SACRAMENTO - California Taxpayers' Association President Teresa Casazza released the following statement regarding Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's budget compromise proposal:

"The California Taxpayers' Association supports budget reform that will end the state's boom-and-bust budget process.

"The Cal-Tax Board of Directors voted today to support the governor's compromise budget proposal that builds upon the provisions of Proposition 58 and strengthens the requirement that the state annually transfer 3 percent of general fund revenue into the rainy day fund.

"As an association representing taxpayers, we have not arrived at our position lightly. Given the current circumstances, however, we can support a temporary sales tax increase as long as it is accompanied by meaningful budget reform, an economic stimulus plan and a future reduction in the sales tax rate that will make the change a net tax reduction over time."

The California Taxpayers' Association is a non-partisan, non-profit organization established in 1926 to fight for taxpayers' rights, guard against unnecessary taxation and promote government efficiency.
