Veterans Affairs Canada: Minister Thompson Marks Battle of Britain Anniversary
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Sept. 6, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement today regarding the 68th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
"Between July and October 1940 a battle raged in the skies over Britain that has come to be regarded as one of the turning points of the Second World War.
With the enemy set to invade, all of Britain looked to the skies for support. Among those who answered the call for help were brave Canadians serving with the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Enemy attacks on British cities caused widespread damage and loss of life, but the Allied forces fought back with intense determination and won over the sky.
The significance of the Battle of Britain is more than just a military victory. It was the first time that air power saved a nation. Canadians, along with Allied forces, saved Britain from invasion and paved the way for the liberation of Europe.
Today, Canada is on the world stage as a strong and powerful voice for freedom. We are once again investing in the equipment and resources our service men and women need to do their jobs. Canadians expect this of us because the world needs a strong and sovereign Canada.
This year we mark the 68th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and honour those who braved dangerous skies for peace and freedom. Our government is proud to honour such selfless service, past and present, and to be doing its part in restoring Canada's strong and independent voice on the world stage."
