Government of Canada Removes Third-Party Spending Limits for Canadian Wheat Board Elections

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Sept. 5, 2008) - The Government of Canada has amended the Regulations Respecting the Election of Directors of the Canadian Wheat Board to repeal section 28, which set third-party spending limits. This regulatory change has removed the previous $10,000 spending restriction on advertising expenses in place for third-party intervenors.

This change will enable a broad debate and participation in Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) elections of Directors. Grain producers are encouraged to fully participate in the upcoming CWB election.

Other provisions concerning third-party election advertising remain unchanged. Third parties will still be required to file a statement with the election coordinator providing the name of each donor that donates more than $100 as well as the amount of the donation, an accounting of the advertising expenses made during the election, and a statutory declaration attesting to the accuracy and completeness of the information.
