Minister Thompson Marks Liberation of Belgium Anniversary

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Sept. 5, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement today regarding the 64th anniversary of the liberation of Belgium by Allied Forces.

"This year marks the 64th anniversary of the liberation of Belgium. After more than four long years of harsh occupation, Canadian Forces played a key role in the struggle to restore liberty to the people of Belgium in 1944.

We mark this anniversary by remembering the sacrifices made by Canadians in bringing freedom to others. More than 800 Canadians in the Second World War made the ultimate sacrifice and are buried in Belgium.

Canadian Forces fought through mud-flooded lands, with dykes and canals that had to be crossed, against a powerful, battle-hardened enemy. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th Canadian Divisions moved through Belgium, supported by the operations of the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Canadian Navy.

Canada's role in the liberation of Belgium marked the origins of the modern, cohesive Canadian military we see today.

It's been said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Canadian men and women have always been willing to step forward to serve our country and the world in times of need. Our government is proud to honour such selfless service and to be doing its part in restoring Canada's strong and independent voice on the world stage."
