GAGETOWN, NEW-BRUNSWICK - (Marketwire - Sept. 5, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today on behalf of the Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, plans for several construction projects at CFB Gagetown with an estimated investment value of over $140 million for the local economy. These projects include the construction of new training accommodations building, and upgrading the base utilities.

"CFB Gagetown has played a critical role in military operations for 50 years and will be a cornerstone of our military operations for years to come," said the Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "Once again, our government is demonstrating its commitment to our Canadian Forces and its implementation of the Canada First Defence Strategy."

"This is a major economic benefit for the province of New Brunswick, and reinforces our government's commitment to maintaining a vital military presence in the region," said Minister Thompson. "Investing in Gagetown will generate significant employment and provide a major boost to the local economy."

The projects include the construction of a 250-room training quarters accommodation building. The contract for this facility was awarded to Maxim 2000 Inc. of Saint John, N.B. on June 27, 2008. A contract for the recapitalization of DND housing was awarded to Multi-Con Group Ltd. of Fredericton, NB. In addition, a project is underway to replace the aging utilities distribution systems, with completion anticipated by fall 2012. Other projects include the construction of a new Music Facility for Cadet training, reconfiguration of the main gate, and construction of a new guard house to allow public access to the CANEX, theatre and outdoor pool.

CFB Gagetown, which has been home to countless soldiers who have served Canadian both at home and abroad, is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year.
