"Maria and I join all Californians in expressing our profound sadness over the loss of these brave men. They are true heroes who courageously put their lives in danger to protect our state and we are forever indebted to their service and sacrifice. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends and fellow firefighters during this difficult time."

Gonsioroski, 41; VanderGriend, 25; and Wahlstrom, 61; died September 1, after their air tanker crashed on its way help fight the Smitty Fire in Calaveras County, CA. All three men were contract firefighters with Neptune Aviation of Missoula, MT.
