Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R) Encourages Runners to Join 'Team Marathon' and Help End Breast Cancer Forever

DALLAS, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its vision to realize a world without breast cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R) is encouraging athletes to participate in Team Marathon, a new initiative that aligns Komen for the Cure with committed, passionate marathon and half marathon runners in an effort to raise money for breast cancer research and community health programs.

Participants can choose to run in a race where Komen is an official marathon partner, or they can decide to fundraise for Komen in any half or full marathon they choose to run. Team Marathon provides different options so runners can decide which fundraising option will fit their training and fundraising goals.

"We are constantly exploring new fundraising options so anyone -- whether their hobbies include running, walking or shopping -- can get behind a cause they believe in," said Katrina McGhee, vice president of marketing for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "This new initiative will bring a whole new level of committed people on board to support Komen for the Cure's promise to end breast cancer forever."

Team Marathon participants receive support from Komen for the Cure every step of the way. After runners register on http://www.komen.org/marathon, they can build their own marathon Web page, track their daily training course, join marathon online communities and get great tips for fundraising. Runners' friends and family can also visit the Web page and donate in their honor.

Runners can commit to raising a minimum of $2,200 by participating in an official Komen marathon, or they can choose to raise $250 and run in any marathon or half marathon of their choice.

For those running an official Komen marathon, 50 percent of donations raised through Team Marathon will support community-based breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs in the local community where the marathon or half marathon is run. The remaining 50 percent will fund national research to find the cures for breast cancer. One hundred percent of the donations received from participants running a marathon of their choice will go toward national research.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure's official marathon partners include the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, P.F. Chang's(R) Rock 'n' Roll Marathon(TM) and Half Marathon, San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon(TM) and Half Marathon, Virginia Beach Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon(TM). In addition, international races Flora London Marathon and real-Berlin Marathon have been added for 2009.
