Science Writer Raps About The CERN Large Hadron Collider

I picture a scientist or a university student interested in quantum mechanics listening to cerebral music like jazz. But science writer, Kate McAlpine has become a YouTube star by rapping about the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Most folks don't know CERN from a large hole in the ground, actually CERN is a large hole in the ground that houses the world's largest particle physics laboratory.

"Kate McAlpine is a rising star on YouTube for her rap performance - about high-energy particle physics.

Her performance has drawn a half-million views so far on YouTube.

The 23-year-old Michigan State University graduate and science writer raps about the Large Hadron Collider, the groundbreaking particle accelerator that has been built in a 17-mile circular tunnel at the CERN laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland." Associated Press

If McAlpine's rap gets kids interested in particle physics, she has performed an invaluable service to the community. Quantum physics is a fascinating subject, and the experiments soon to be conducted at the LHC are mindblowing. By colliding two beams of protons traveling at almost the speed of light scientists hope to discover the "God particle" that explains how sub-atomic particles accumulate mass.

There are a few respected scientists who warn there's a very slight chance that the experiments may unleash black holes that have the potential to destroy the world. I'm not a physicist and I suck at math, but even if there's only an infinitesimal chance at an end of the world scenario, I'm of the opinion that those eggheads at CERN should close up shop.

But until a baby black hole swallows up the world, I'm going to groove to McAlpine's rap.
