Statement by the Hon. Jason Kenney, PC, MP Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity) on the Month of Ramadan
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Aug. 30, 2008) - The holy month of Ramadan, which is about to begin, is a time of great reflection for Muslims as they are called upon to fast and worship. Such observance is intended to foster generosity and understanding. Ramadan is also a month of giving, sharing and socializing.
As Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said, "Our peaceful, prosperous and pluralistic society welcomes people of all faiths." Canada has benefited greatly from the contributions of Muslim Canadians, and this special month for the Muslim community reminds us both of the richness of our cultural diversity and of our shared values as Canadians. I encourage all Canadians to use this month as an opportunity to learn about the numerous and impressive contributions of Muslims in Canada.
As Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish a bountiful and peaceful Ramadan to all Muslims.
Ramadan Mubarak!
