Industrial Directory Reports Montana Manufacturing Employment Remains Steady

Industrial employment inMontana remained unchanged over the past twenty four
months according to the 2009 Montana Manufacturers Directory, a compilation of
state industry published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI)Evanston,
IL. MNI reportsMontana lost just 242 of the 35,397 industrial jobs MNI
reported active in the state as of June 2006. Previous MNI canvasses reported
an industrial employment increase of 3.7% from June 2004-2005, a 1% increase
between the survey period of June 2005-2006, and no significant change from
2006 through 2008, contrary to the steep industrial employment losses suffered
by much of the U.S. over the same period.

"While most other states have been losing manufacturing jobs to
technology, automation and outsourcing,Montana's natural resources, as well
as its proximity to the Canadian market, have helped the state increase
exports and retain industrial facilities," says Tom Dubin, President of the
Evanston, IL-based publishing firm, which has been surveying industrial
sectors since 1912. Recent government reports indicateMontana's exports saw
the largest percentage increase of any state since 2003, with export shipments
totaling $1.1 billion in 2007.
Manufacturers' News reportsMontana is home to 2,131 manufacturers
employing 35,155 workers. MNI profiles manufacturers of all sizes, including
small, start-up companies with just a few employees.
MNI reports the lumber and wood sector is the state's largest, accounting
for 6,075 of the state's jobs, down 3% or 184 jobs over the past twelve
months. Printing/publishing was up 5.2% over the year and currently accounts
for 3,384 industrial jobs. Food products manufacturing is the state's third
largest sector with 3,091 jobs, up 5.6%. Other sectors gaining jobs include
rubber and miscellaneous plastic products, up 7.3% and transportation
equipment, up 7.8% since June 2007.
According to Manufacturers' News,Northwest Montana accounts for the most
industrial employment with 15,330 jobs, or 44%, up a half percent over the
year.Southeast Montana is home to 9,499 jobs, down 1.2% over the past twelve
months. The Southwest region of the state is home to 8,596 jobs while
Northeast Montana accounts for 1,730 of the state's jobs, with no change
reported over the year for either region.
MNI's city data shows Billings is the state's industrial capital with
5,383 industrial jobs, down 3% over the year.Kalispell accounts for 3,067 of
the state's manufacturing jobs, down 1.4% over the past twelve months, while
third-rankedMissoula reported no change in employment and currently accounts
for 3,008 of the state's industrial jobs.Bozeman represents 2,327
manufacturing jobs, posting a 4.2% gain over the year, whileColumbia Falls is
home to 2,213 workers, with no significant change posted.
