Andiamo Systems Analyzes Online Buzz Leading up to the Democratic National Convention
Leading Provider of Social Media Measurement Keeps Finger on the Pulse of Consumer Opinion

New polls are announced daily trying to
predict the outcome of this year's presidential election. Given that the
Internet is playing such a large role in these elections, politicians need
to get an indication of what people are discussing online. Responding to
this need, Andiamo Systems (http://www.andiamosystems.com), a leading
online Social Media Measurement company, has been conducting its own social
media research to determine what the buzz is in the world of social media.
It appears that leading up to this year's Democratic National Convention
(www.demconvention.com) conversations in the social media world are more
than ramping up with chatter concerning some very top-line issues that are
certain to be monikers in the 2008 election.
Andiamo Systems continuously monitors millions of blogs, message boards,
forums and social networks and over the past week focused on the political
landscape to see not only whom everyone is talking about but also what
issues are standing out.
"With the relative ease of posting opinions online, social media is the new
standard for keeping your finger on the pulse of quickly changing consumer
opinions," says John Hingley, founder and CEO of Andiamo Systems.
"Traditional polls are extremely valuable, however what candidates also
need to know is what is being discussed in user generated media, not only
what the polls are asking. Additionally, many traditional polls don't
reach the younger demographic since so many younger voters communicate by
cellular phones and online."
"The latest traditional polls show an average of 46% of registered voters
saying they favor or lean to the putative Democratic candidate, while 42%
back his likely Republican rival. Based on the volume and sentiment of the
social media buzz we measured, Barack Obama may actually be favored at a
slightly higher rate than the current polls suggest," adds Hingley.
For the period of August 11-18 the results for who is registering the
greatest amount of buzz in each top category are:
-- Most Overall Buzz
Obama with 55% -- 56% of it positive toward the nominee
McCain with 45% -- 47% of it positive toward the nominee
-- The top issue
The Saddleback debate: McCain won the debate 56% to 41%. Many were
surprised at how well McCain did, across party lines. They also disliked
the accusations the Obama camp made about potential cheating on the McCain
side.
-- Second most discussed issue: Who should get the Vice President spot?
Results: 60% favor Joe Biden, 19% favor Hillary Clinton
-- On Hillary Clinton:
76% of all Clinton buzz includes references to Obama and their future
political relationship.
-- The top issue regarding Hillary Clinton:
A slightly negative perception that Obama caved into all the Clintons'
demands by agreeing to allow Bill Clinton to speak and placing Hillary on
the nominee list.
"These candidates are brands, as powerful as Coca-Cola, Mercedes Benz or
most others," states Hingley. "Measuring and analyzing perception and
opinions about these politician brands can reveal tremendous insight into
the dynamic topics and issues these nominees must speak to."
