Christina Applegate is Happy, Healthy -- and Cancer-Free

By Garrett Godwin

E! Online reported yesterday that Christina Applegate is cancer-free. The 36-year-old actress stated last month that she was diagnosed in the early stages of breast cancer and started to undergo treatment. She revealed that for the past six years, she's been getting regular mammograms and followed it up from a biopsy with a second MRI that showed the cancer.

"I was so mad and I -- just remember I was -- I was just shaking" Applegate said in an Good Morning America interview yesterday to co-host and fellow breast cancer survivor Robin Roberts. The interview is scheduled to air this morning. [E! Online]

"And then also immediately, I had to go into ... 'take-care-of-business mode', which was... I asked them, "What do I do now? What -- what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?" [E! Online]

Applegate has been called "the poster girl for preventive care"; her mother also battled and survived breast cancer.

"I'm clear" Applegate said in the interview schedule to air this morning. "Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer." [E! Online]

Applegate is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy for her role on ABC's Samantha Who?, which starts its second season on September 29. She is also set to appear with Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Charlize Theron, and Jennifer Aniston in the hour special, "Stand Up to Cancer", airing September 5 on NBC, ABC, and CBS.

Update

When Applegate's GMA interview aired this morning, she stated that she had a double mastectomy three weeks ago, and will have reconstructive surgery for the next eight months. The actress recalls making the "tough" decision to have the mastectomy.

"Sometimes, you know" Applegate continued, "I cry and sometimes I scream and I get really angry and I get really like, you know, into wallowing into self-pity sometimes. And I think that's -- it's all part of healing, and anyone who's going through it out there, it's OK to cry. It's OK to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to." [Associated Press]

The actress continues to keep her sense of humor and optimism throughout this difficult period and time and looks ahead to the future.

"I've laughed so much in the last three weeks" Applegate stated. "I love living, and really love my life, and I knew that from this moment on it was only going to be good that was going to be coming. Yeah, I'll face challenges, but you can't get any darker than where I've been. So knowing that in my soul gave me the strength to say, 'I have to get out there and make this positive." [AP]
