Neues Kabarett Music Series 10th Anniversary Season

The Brecht Forum's Neues Kabarett music series celebrates its 10th anniversary season

The Brecht Forum celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Neues Kabarett music series with a season focused on new works by some of today's most exciting musical creators. Recently called "intrepid" and "exemplary" by Time Out New York and lauded in the past by such publications as The Wire and All About Jazz, Neues Kabarett has for the last decade presented a fascinating combination of artists.

The series, organized by a dedicated collective of volunteers, continues its commitment to artistic excellence and high-quality performing opportunities along with the city-wide development of a thriving, healthy economy for artists. Seeking to carve out a viable new space for creative and experimental music, the Neues Kabarett collective began organizing concerts in October 1998. Since then, the series has presented more than 100 concerts and premiered an extraordinary amount of new work including 16 new commissions in the last two years (made possible by the New York State Music Fund).

From free-jazz to experimental, improvised to through-composed, known instruments to those just invented, Neues Kabarett has connected audiences with established and upcoming artists in intimate concerts at its Brecht Forum home. In the coming year, the series will also continue to provide important behind-the-scenes context for artists' work by hosting master classes and workshops and such events as post-concert dialogues.

The Brecht Forum is a place for people who are working for fundamental social change and a new culture that puts human needs first. The Brecht Forum offers a year-round program of classes, lectures, seminars, art exhibitions, performances, popular education workshops and language classes in its new, beautifully renovated home looking out over the Hudson River.

The Brecht Forum's Neues Kabarett music series has presented monthly avant-garde / free jazz and experimental music concerts since 1998. We create performing opportunities for established and emerging artists (sometimes involving visual artists, dancers and poets) and have helped create a viable, visible new performance space at The Brecht Forum. In addition, Neues Kabarett presents occasional events in other venues such as galleries and community gardens, and is a volunteer-run collective.
