Dental CAD/CAM Production Outsourcing Jumps 15% Over 2007
WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Millennium Research Group's
(MRG's) new Crown and Bridge Marketrack(TM) project indicates that 37% of
computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) production was
outsourced in Q2 of 2008. According to MRG's Global Markets for Dental CAD/CAM
Systems 2008 report, this represents a 15% increase in proportion over 2007.
Many dental laboratories outsource CAD/CAM crown and bridge production to
keep up with demand for CAD/CAM restorations. Outsourcing greatly decreases
the capital expenditure for the necessary equipment, requiring a dental
laboratory to invest only in a scanner, the cost of which is sometimes as low
as 25% of a complete CAD/CAM system. Nobel Biocare and Straumann/etkon -- two
key competitors in the CAD/CAM market -- offer exclusively outsourced
production. Accordingly, many labs view outsourcing as a more viable and
profitable option than purchasing a complete CAD/CAM system.
"The more labs that outsource CAD/CAM restoration, the better," says Kevin
Flewwelling, Manager of MRG's Orthopedics and Dental division. "This practice
will allow more dentists to meet the increasing patient demand for
custom-milled crowns and bridges."
For in-depth analysis and five-year growth forecasts, MRG also offers its
Global Markets for Dental CAD/CAM Systems 2008 report, which includes coverage
on the US,Europe, andJapan. Coverage of industry competitors includes 3M
ESPE, 3Shape, Dentsply, etkon, GC, KaVo, Nobel Biocare, Sirona, U-Best Dental
Technology Inc., Wieland Dental Systems, and WOL-DENT.
About the CAD/CAM Production Process
To create CAD/CAM crowns and bridges, dentists create an impression of the
site to be restored. The mold of the site is then sent to a lab, where a
technician digitally scans the model. Using computer-aided design software,
the technician will design a 3D model of the restoration. Technicians will
then employ the digitized 3D model and CAD/CAM technology to mill the
restoration directly in the laboratory or send the data to a production center
for milling. The latter method is commonly referred to as outsourcing.
