Canada's Government Helps Young People Find Jobs by Hosting a Career Fair

MEDICINE HAT, ALBERTA - (Marketwire - Aug. 13, 2008) - The Honourable Monte Solberg, Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat and Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today attended a career fair and barbecue organized by the Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) in Medicine Hat and the YMCA YouthWORKS! employment centre. At the fair, Minister Solberg met with employers to showcase employment opportunities in the Medicine Hat area.

"The Government of Canada is committed to helping young people get the skills and knowledge they need to improve their employment opportunities," said Minister Solberg. "By working with local employers, we can make sure that young people get valuable work experience, and that our community has a strong and vibrant work force for the future."

Young people from across the city attended the SCCY career fair to learn about innovative and interesting employment opportunities currently available to young people in the city. The career fair also provided employers with the opportunity to find enthusiastic employees.

"Whatever the job-big or small, short or long term-we can help you fill it," said Teague Lamarche, Lead Youth Services Officer, Medicine Hat SCCY. "We have had a wonderful season working with employers and young people to fulfil their summer employment needs."

Service Canada Centres for Youth link youth and employers. The Centres provide young people with access to job postings, interview advice, assistance with resume writing, and job-search strategies, as well as a location for employers to post job openings. SCCYs also provide valuable information on health and safety in the workplace.

This year, employers interested in using SCCY services and youth looking for summer employment can visit the Medicine Hat SCCY in person between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, at 770 1st Street SE until August 29, 2008. They can also call the Centre at 403-529-4733, send a fax to 403-529-4734, or send an e-mail to sccy.medicinehat@gmail.com. Job postings are available online at www.jobbank.gc.ca under "Student Job Search," "Alberta," "Brooks and Medicine Hat Area."
