The National Spokesperson for the Friends of the Poor Walk is Deacon Alex Jones. Deacon Jones was ordained a Permanent Deacon and currently serves three parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit. This is a golden opportunity also for Deacon Jones to have direct involvement in the improvement of thousands of peoples' lives, as the money raised by the Friends of the Poor Walk stays directly in the hands of the local SVdP Conferences and Councils for direct and immediate aid to the poor. Founded in 1833 in France, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is largest lay Catholic charitable organization in the world. The Society today has more than 690,000 members operating in 142 countries of which there are 115,000 U.S. members. Nearly six million hours of personal time were donated by the Society's U.S. members in 2006, aiding more than 20 million of their neighbors in distress and offering services valued at nearly $500 million. Each local Society of St. Vincent de Paul works daily with the poor of their local community, delivering needed aid and support. The SVdP operates thrift stores, food pantries and provides personal visits by its members to the homes of the poor.
