Update: Is The Montauk Monster a Raccoon?

By Robert Paul Reyes

Since I posted my essay "The Montauk Monster: Publicity Stunt, Alien, or Experiment Gone Wrong" recently, it has been the most viewed story on this Web site.

Around water coolers all over this nation hardworking employees are debating the origin of this beast. Americans love mysteries, we can't get enough of Bigfoot, UFO's, the Loch Ness Monster and the Montauk Monster.

Scientists can't stand to see everyday people having a good time with a mystery, and they have quickly issued statements claiming that the Montauk Monster is a dog or a raccoon.

Can we really trust an explanation from an authority? Remember all the intelligence experts claiming that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction up the wazoo?

Why can't eggheads let us Average Joe's have a little fun, what's life without a few imponderable mysteries?

A parent can really scare the BeJesus out of a child by making this threat: Eat your spinach or the Montauk Monster will eat you for breakfast. But if we tell our children that if they don't clean their plates that a raccoon will eat them, they will laugh at us.

As far as I'm concerned we don't know if the Montauk Monster is an alien, a mutation or a dog. It's an unanswered question, and by the gods we need a few mysteries.
