Surrendered Militant, 3 Family Members Killed in Kashmir

By Fayaz Wani

Jammu, July 24-Suspected militants gunned down a surrendered militant and his three family members in the mountainous Doda region of Kashmir on Thursday.

Police sources said that a group of gunmen barged into the house of a surrendered militant, Ghulam Hassan Wani at village Marmath Badi in the mountainous Doda region. The gunmen fired indiscriminately on Wani and his family members. In the shoot-out, Wani, his 31 year old wife, daughter and nephew were killed. His son was critically injured in the shoot-out and has been hospitalised.

Wani was Hizbul Mujahideen militant and surrendered before the army and civil authorities in November 2007. Since then he was under the hit list of the militant group.

Immediately after the incident, police, para-military and army personnel rushed to the spot and launched massive combing and search operations to track down the gunmen responsible for the attack. No arrests were, however, reported.

Fayaz Wani reports on life in Srinagar, Kashmir.
