British Columbia/Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian Legion Receives Federal Support for Youth Ambassadors of Remembrance Program

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA - (Marketwire - July 23, 2008) - Selected students will become youth ambassadors of remembrance through a commemorative program created by the British Columbia/Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian Legion thanks to support from the Government of Canada.

On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquihalla, announced today a contribution of up to $20,000 to the British Columbia/Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian Legion.

"This program is just the kind of initiative young Canadians can use to increase their knowledge of Canada's proud military history," said Minister Thompson. "By becoming involved in remembrance activities and hearing Veterans' stories, these young people will ensure that Canada's service men and women are not forgotten."

"This program will benefit British Columbia and Yukon youth as well as future generations," said Minister Day. "The youth ambassadors will encourage young Canadians to preserve our military history for many years to come."

Funding provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund will assist in the development and launch of the Ambassadors of Remembrance program. The youth ambassadors will volunteer with their local Legion branches and spend time with Veterans to learn about their service and sacrifices. They will also participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies and will encourage other young people to become active in remembrance activities.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
