Folsom's New Library Opens Aug. 6th

FOLSOM -- Folsom's newest public library will serve students, as well as residents of all ages, when it opens Wednesday, Aug. 6 on the campus of Vista del Lago High School. The library is jointly funded and operated by the City of Folsom and Folsom Cordova United School District (FCUSD).

The new joint-use library is named in honor of an individual who recognized the importance of community partnerships - former FCUSD Superintendent Norman R. Siefkin, who passed away in 2007. The FCUSD Board of Education voted unanimously to name the library for Siefkin, who served as superintendent from 1999 to 2005.

The public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house at the new library beginning at 5 p.m. Aug. 6. The library is located at 1970 Broadstone Parkway, on the west side of the Vista del Lago campus. Participants may tour the new facility and check out books and audiovisual materials during special extended hours until 8 p.m. that evening.

"This striking new library offers much more than a typical small school or branch library due to the synergy of the City and school district's efforts," said Mayor Eric King. "Students will have access to an extended collection of books and longer hours of operation. Residents of nearby neighborhoods will appreciate the close proximity of this library, and young families will enjoy the separate children's room."

The 13,000 square foot library will feature a 35-station computer lab for students, free wireless access for laptop computer users, access to books housed at libraries throughout the Sacramento region, and two convenient self-check stations. The library will also offer seven computers for public use.

FCUSD Board President Roger Benton said the decision to name the joint-use library for Siefkin was an easy one. "Norm was incredibly important to the lives of our district's students. In addition, he made many contributions to both the school district and the greater Sacramento community through service on a wide variety of community boards and commissions."

Siefkin served on the Folsom Prison Advisory Council, the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Sacramento Children's Home Board of Directors, the Linking Education and Economic Development (LEED) Board, and Partners in Education (including the University of California, Davis; California State University, Sacramento; Los Rios Community College District; and local school districts throughout the Sacramento region.

Siefkin received the CSU Sacramento Alumni Partner of the Year Award in 2005, the Cordova Community Council Educator of the Year Award in 2005 and the City of Folsom's Man of the Year Award in 1981. He also created FCUSD's Community Education Center.

Beginning Aug. 7, the Norman R. Siefkin Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The Folsom Public Library also includes the Georgia Murray Building located at 411 Stafford St. For more information on local library services, visit www.folsomlibrary.com or call 355-7374.
