D.C. City Council Defies The Law: Ignores U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Handguns
Less than a month after the U.S. Supreme Court rules against a handgun ban and trigger-lock requirement in the D.C. v. Heller case, the very man who brought and won the suit against the District's 32-year-old ban on handguns, Dick Heller, gets a rude awakening.
Right after the legal victory, Heller was one of the very first in line to apply for a handgun permit, only to have his registration rejected. "This is a blatant defiance of a Supreme Court ruling," says Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America (GOA), "a defiance of the law. There is no question that their 'emergency legislation' will be challenged and overturned."
Pratt is available for interviews to discuss the city's actions and express his convictions regarding why Congress should "exercise its constitutional responsibility under Article I, Section 8, Clause 17, to rein in the lawless Washington D.C. government."
According to Heller, the City Council legislation allows for semi-automatic handguns with clips that hold less than 11 bullets, leading him to believe his seven-bullet-clip gun should've been legal. But the City surprisingly rejected his application because, according to a spokesman for the D.C. police department, the fact that the gun was a bottom-loading weapon, made it illegal in that all such weapons are grouped with machine guns.
"This is just unacceptable," adds Pratt. "No wonder the District is awash with lawlessness. The contempt for the law starts in the city council chambers."
