Fenzian Shown to Provide Asthma Sufferers with Relief

Non-medicinal, transcutaneous electronic impulse treatment available in Irvine.

For asthma sufferers, there are many treatment options available, some of which involve a side effects or are ineffective in providing relief. A promising new controlled pilot study conducted by the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), however, provides new hope to asthma sufferers for an effective, non-medicinal way to treat asthma. The study has shown a consistent pattern of improved asthma symptoms in 20 test subjects and reduced bronchodilator use after six weeks of transcutaneous electronic impulse treatment (TEIT). The TEIT was delivered via a patented, hand-held device that is part of the Fenzian Treatment System (Fenzian). Fenzian treatments are available in Orange County at Next Level Wellness Center in Irvine.

The one-time, minimal patient study results are the findings of a team of researchers led by Christopher B. Cooper, professor of medicine and physiology, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, at UCLA. Cooper and his team presented their findings at the 2008 International Conference of the American Thoracic Society. The findings are significant enough to warrant further study. An additional, study involving four or five major medical universities is in the planning stages.

The research team provided four weeks of baseline measurements. Twelve women and eight men with mild persistent asthma were randomized to receive TEIT using a Fenzian device or a control treatment with an identical but inactivated device. Patients and research staff obtaining data were blinded. Airway physiology was assessed by spirometry and impulse oscillometry. Asthma control was assessed by validated questionnaires and diary cards. Complete assessments were repeated after six weeks.

The research team reported that a positive trend was seen in those receiving Fenzian treatments while no changes were seen with sham treatment recipients. The team wrote, "This sham-controlled pilot study shows a consistent pattern of improved asthma symptoms and reduced bronchodilator use after six weeks of TEIT. Further clinical and methodological studies of this treatment approach are justified by these findings."

Fenzian is a device used for pain management. The Fenzian Treatment System is the result of more than 50 years of research and development in clinical applications. It is supported by ongoing clinical trials and is used by colleges and universities, professional athletic programs and healthcare facilities worldwide. The Fenzian handheld device and a trained practitioner work in concert to provide relief. The battery operated device is placed on the patient's skin to deliver painless, biphasic electrical impulses. Utilizing changes in skin impedance derived from biofeedback and displayed on the device's digital readout, the practitioner guides the device to stimulate the patient's nerve network. The Federal Drug Administration has approved the Fenzian Treatment System for chronic intractable pain.

The study was funded by Eumedic Ltd.
