Free Health Tips: Type II Diabetes
By Steve Fisher, ND
A refined carbohydrate is a sugar or a starch that has been processed; and because of this processing they lose most of their nutritional value. When ingested the body then turns them into glucose rapidly. This in turn produces a burst of insulin to handle this glucose surge. In an attempt to tell you what happens when you eat refined carbohydrates I am intentionally over simplifying the process.
Imagine insulin to be a key and each cell has a keyhole. The keyhole is where insulin brings nutrients into each cell. When you ingest too many refined carbohydrates you will wear-out the keyhole eventually, and the end result will be where glucose cannot easily enter the cell and it remains in the bloodstream.
The end result of this is what we call Type II Diabetes or what we used to call Adult Onset Diabetes. It is not called the latter any longer because we now have young children with this problem. This is really sad; because we, as a society have become undisciplined in our eating habits.
The solution is quite simple: stop eating refined carbohydrates (white sugar, white flour, or white rice) and replace them with whole grains or in the case of sugar with stevia, or other healthy alternatives!
