Assault at Stony Mountain Institution


WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - (Marketwire - July 6, 2008) - At approximately 9 p.m. on July 5, 2008 an inmate of Stony Mountain Institution was assaulted. The injured inmate was immediately escorted to the nearest outside hospital for medical care.

The inmate injuries are not considered life threatening. The inmate remains in outside hospital for treatment.

Police have been notified and an investigation into the incident is underway.

In order to improve its practices and prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with police in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority of the operations of the federal correctional system.

Stony Mountain Institution is currently in lockdown as a result of the assault.

Stony Mountain Institution is a federal institution for medium security inmates located 11 km north of Winnipeg. There are currently 537 inmates at Stony Mountain Institution.
