Philadelphia University to Host Reebok's Premier Basketball Camp for Top High School Players July 6-10

PHILADELPHIA, July 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Philadelphia University for the second year will host Reebok's All American Camp for the nation's premier high school basketball players July 6-10, a showcase of talent expected to draw the top college coaches, NBA scouts and sports media outlets in the country.

Some 150 of the nation's best high school hoops players from 31 states will attend the five-day camp, including top prospects Rinardo Sidney (Ca.), Maalik Wayns (Pa.) and Kenny Boynton (Fl.). Approximately 80 of the participants were chosen by a national selection committee made up of high school coaches and evaluators. The remaining spots were awarded through 16 Headliner Tryout Camps Reebok hosted across the country, including one that took place June 7-8 at Philadelphia University.

"We are so pleased to be partnering with Reebok once again this year to host this premier basketball camp," said Thomas Shirley, director of athletics and head women's basketball coach at the East Falls campus. "We have a terrific new facility and we're bringing to campus the top 150 high school players and top coaches in the country - it's a win-win situation for Reebok, the players and for the University."

The five-day camp will focus on team court performance, individual playing skills and life skills and career seminars, according to Christopher Rivers, Reebok's director of basketball.

But it will be the competitive games scheduled during the camp that will be the main attraction for the college recruiters and NBA scouts who will be seeking to identify the next great college or NBA hoops stars. Rivers said he expects about 300 Division I coaches daily to turn out for this year's camp, in addition to recruiters and sports reporters from more than 100 media outlets.

For the players, this is an "opportunity to compete against the best," Rivers said, in addition to developing their game and learning to assess their performance. In addition, the Reebok camp provides a great service to the college basketball community by gathering the nation's top players in one place for three days of "great ball," he said, predicting about 145 of this year's players will go on to play Division I basketball.

Basketball games will open to coaches, media and the public on July 8, 9 and 10. On Thursday, July 10, the championship game will be played at 6 p.m. and the all-star game will be played at 7:15 p.m.

Philadelphia University was chosen once again to host the event because of its state-of-the-art facilities, intimate setting and central location in a major city, Rivers said. The Gallagher Athletic and Recreational and Convocation Center, which opened in fall 2006, features three full-size basketball courts. On one of those courts, Philadelphia University Men's Basketball Coach Herb Magee last year became the winningest Division II coach in NCAA history.

Philadelphia University, founded in 1884, is a private university with 3,300 full- and part-time students enrolled in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs. The University includes Schools of Architecture, Business Administration, Design and Media, Engineering and Textiles, Liberal Arts and Science and Health. For more information, go to www.PhilaU.edu.
