Sex Abuse Victims Release 'Devastating' Documents
DENVER, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Newly released church records show that
Denver Catholic officials had dozens of chances to report a pedophile to
police but repeatedly chose not to, instead secretly moving him from parish to
parish where White had unlimited access to unsuspecting children and their
families.
More than 100+ pages of Archdiocesan secret files of Fr. Robert White are
being disclosed today.
The documents show at least six times where White admitted to the
Archdiocesan officials that he had molested children. Some examples of the
knowledge and the concealment shown in the documents include:
"He declared that he had made some serious mistakes, . . ., when alone
with some boy overwhelming curiosity over comes him, not very often, sometimes
catches himself and does not complete act, goes weeks without falling."
"After Father opened up, he admitted the approach to the boy, saying he
had touched his leg, immodest touches, and the boy's passions were aroused.
He admitted two such incidents during the spring and summer. Then he admitted
the following incidents: once with [redacted]; twice with [redacted]; twice
with [redacted], on one of which he does not think his passions were aroused.
Asked if this was all, he said there was one other, with [redacted]."
The documents are now being made public as part of a 4.5 million dollar
settlement by 12 survivors of White. One of the terms of the settlement was
that these survivors would be able to receive and release these documents.
The settlement of the cases was announced yesterday. Overall there were
14 survivors of three different priests that settled their cases. The
molesting priests were Harold White, Leonard Abercrombie, and Lawrence St.
Peter. The Denver Post story on the settlements can be found at
http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_9758609.
The cases settled for 4.5 million dollars.
St. Paul Attorney Jeffrey Anderson represented the 12 survivors in these
cases. "My sincere gratitude and respect goes out to these survivors who
stood up and spoke out. If it wasn't for their courage these documents and
the Archdiocese's secrets would have never been exposed."
Attorney Anderson has represented thousands of survivors and brought cases
against every Diocese inthe United States over the last 25 plus years. He
said that, "these documents are some of the worst I have ever seen -- they
show that the Archdiocese chose to save face instead of saving children."
"This settlement and the release of these documents signals a new day for
this Archdiocese and those courageous survivors," said Anderson at the Denver
news conference on July 1.
