Wal-Mart's New Logo

By David Nassar

A new logo.

That's Wal-Mart's answer to all the criticism it has received for its irresponsible business practices.

But while Wal-Mart unveiled its new logo yesterday, nothing is changing for its workers who need health care, its customers who expect non-toxic toys, and its neighbors who must deal with increased traffic, crime, and pollution.

These issues deserve to be addressed substantively -- not with a gimmicky logo change. Click here to see the new logo and tell us what you think about it:

Wal-Mart spends millions on PR campaigns and re-branding efforts to fix its public image.

That's money the chain could be spending on better wages and health care for its employees, or on stronger product safety standards, or on more environmentally friendly practices.

But instead of improving its behavior, Wal-Mart is trying to gloss it over with a facelift that doesn't change anything. Giving its employees new uniforms is not the same as giving them better health coverage. Changing color schemes is not the same as changing its impact on the environment. And a friendlier logo is not the same as a friendlier company.

Wal-Mart needs to start fixing its practices, not just its image.

Wal-Mart may think its new logo is fooling everyone into thinking it has become a more responsible company -- but you and I know better.

A new corporate identity takes more than a new logo -- it's takes a true turn-around in executive leadership and store policy. A softer, friendlier Wal-Mart can't be bought with a bucket of paint and new stationery.

That's why Wal-Mart Watch will continue to hold the retail giant's feet to the fire on the most important issues, making sure it is accountable for its poor treatment of its workers, its neighbors, and the environment.
