Two Militants, Army Officer Killed in Kashmir Gunfight

By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, July 1: Two militants and an Indian army officer were killed in a gunfight in Kashmir on Tuesday.

Police sources said that Indian army personnel deployed on the frontiers with Pakistan in Kashmir noticed a group of militants trying to infiltrate into Kashmir from the Roshni post in North Kashmir. They said that the militants were asked to surrender and lay down the weapons. "They, however, turned down the offer and fired from sophisticated weapons. The fire was returned by the troops and in the ensuing gunfight, two heavily armed militants were killed," the sources said.

They said that an Indian army officer was also killed in the gunfight. They also claimed that some arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site.

The identity of the slain militants and the outfit to which they owe allegiance could not be ascertained
