St. Helena's Hospital Orders New Model 400kW Fuel Cell From UTC Power

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company, today announced it will supply St. Helena Hospital inCalifornia'sNapa Valley with its new, next-generation fuel cell, the PureCell(R) Model 400 system, which will be in full production in the summer of 2009.

St. Helena Hospital is a 181-bed full-service community hospital and part of Adventist Health, a not-for-profit health care system operating in California,Hawaii,Oregon andWashington.

The UTC Power fuel cell will provide St. Helena Hospital with 400 kilowatts of continuous, clean power. Fuel cells are one of the cleanest and quietest power-generating technologies in the world today. Also highly energy efficient, fuel cells produce electricity, heat and water electrochemically.

The waste heat that is a natural byproduct of the fuel cell process will be used to supply hot water and space heating for three of the hospital's buildings. This will allow St. Helena Hospital to reduce its burden on the power grid, minimize the operation of existing mechanical systems and reduce its impact on the environment.

The hospital's fuel cell was partially funded by a grant from the California Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). The California SGIP provides financial incentives for the installation of new, clean, and energy-efficient on-site distributed generation

Jan van Dokkum, UTC Power president, said, "Full-service hospitals are a very good application for fuel cells because of the facility's requirement for reliable power and thermal energy around-the clock. Besides helping the hospital achieve significant year-round energy savings, the highly energy-efficient PureCell Model 400 fuel cell meets the strictCalifornia emissions standards and demonstrates the hospital's commitment to environmental responsibility," van Dokkum said.

UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company, is a full-service provider of environmentally responsible power solutions. With 50 years of experience, UTC Power is the world leader in developing and producing fuel cells for on-site power, transportation, space and defense applications, as well as a leader in innovative, renewable energy solutions and combined cooling, heating and power solutions for the distributed energy market.

St. Helena Hospital servesNapa,Lake,Solano,Sonoma andMendocino counties with emergency, maternity, medical, surgical and behavioral health care. Widely recognized as one of the best heart and vascular centers in the North Bay, the hospital is building a 24,000-square-foot cancer center and outpatient surgery center, funded by nearly $25 million in community contributions.
