Moving Arts 14th Annual Premiere One-Act Festival

June 7-June 29, 2008

For the last fourteen years, Moving Arts has held a competition to find the best Los Angeles premieres of one-act plays. The winner is produced alongside commissioned plays.

This year's winner, selected out of 250 submissions, is Kevin Doyle's Compression of a Casualty. Compression of a Casualty is taken from actual CNN transcripts that highlight the death of the 138th casualty of the Iraq war- Private Joel L. Bertoldie- officially surpassing the casualty count of Desert Storm. The piece uniquely examines the media's lack of attention to the war and its casualties. "At the war's five-year mark with the casualty count now in excess of 4,000 U.S. soldiers, Mr. Doyle's play resonates profoundly," said Stephanie Walker, the festival co-producer. "It's especially appropriate in light of the new year-long project kicked off last month in the Los Angeles theatre community and initiated by Moving Arts member, E.M. Lewis- The War Plays Project."

The festival will additionally feature the first and second runners up of the competition- Hip-Skidoo by Kevin Christopher Snipes and Rising Hot Air by Jonathan Caren. Rounding out the evening will be plays commissioned by Moving Arts member playwrights.
