100,000 Activists spoke out for Peaceful Diplomacy
By Kevin Martin
June 10th, with the Capital in the background, Barbara Lee, Lynn Woolsey, Marcy Kaptur, Sheila Jackson-Lee and many others joined ordinary citizens taking their turn to talk with citizens in Iran.
The "Enough Fear Tour" has successful facilitated person to person democracy in New York and Boston through cold war era 'red phones.' Volunteers from Iran waited by the phone and talk to US residents about diplomacy, Iranian culture, and the US presidential race.
This campaign has never been more important. H.Con.Res. 36, according to Carah Ong of the Center for Arms Control and Non-proliferation, has a "particular clause that some many fear is tantamount to declaring that the President should pursue a naval blockade against Iran, which would be an act of war." We cannot let this resolution go through CALL YOUR REP. and Speak Out Against these Sanctions.
During this campaign, Peace Action helped organize volunteers and activists for a Congressional call in day to remind those politicians not participating that it's important to talk to Iran. We asked for them to work for direct, unconditional, and comprehensive talks between the U.S. and Iran and reminded them that the U.S. and Iran share a common interest: a stable Iraq, Middle East and Afghanistan.
This message resonated with all 100,000 of our members who bombarded the Congressional switchboard that day.
We're making strides and we know it. With 6 more months of the Bush regime we cannot relent. The politicians need to know we will not tolerate any more saber rattling - even Pat Buchanan is supporting our call for diplomacy.
You can join this citizen's movement to prevent a future war before it starts. Tell your representative you won't vote for war rhetoric by taking our Peace Voter pledge. Together, we can build on our work to create a better, more diplomatic, U.S. foreign policy and open a new chapter in U.S. Iranian relations.
