The American Society of Transplantation Announces Dr. Barbara T. Murphy as President


MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Society of Transplantation (AST) is pleased to announce that Barbara T. Murphy, M.D., has been installed as the Society's president for 2008-2009.

Dr. Murphy assumed her responsibilities at the American Transplant Congress inToronto, Canada at a conference that began May 31.

Dr. Murphy holds the post of Irene and Dr. Arthur M. Fishberg Professor of Medicine and chief, Division of Nephrology, at Mount Sinai School of Medicine inNew York. Dr. Murphy received her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She completed a Nephrology Fellowship at the Renal Division atBrigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School inBoston.

Dr. Murphy chaired the AST's Education Committee in 2003-04. She served as a councilor-at-large to the AST Board and the AST chair of the 2007 American Transplant Congress Program Committee. She is also a member of the Joint Council.

During her career, Dr. Murphy has received many honors, including AST's Young Investigator Award in Basic Science in 2003. Dr. Murphy recently received an award as part of the NIH Genomics Consortium. She is principal investigator of a training grant focusing on the molecular basis of renal disease.
